Daß die Salonniere dennoch keineswegs eine feste Heimat in der Gesellschaft finden konnte, daß sie im Gegenteil an dieser litt, lag vor allem an dem verbreiteten Judenhaß in der Bevölkerung. Alle Versuche, ihrerseits die Mauern des Vorurteils zu durchbrechen, blieben weitgehend wirkungslos.
Vor dem Hintergrund dieser scenario muß Rahels Entwicklung verstanden werden. An vielen Stellen ihrer Aufzeichnungen kommt das Thema Judentum offen zur Sprache. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, wie die „jüdische Rolle“ ihr Selbstverständnis, ihre Identität beeinflußt hat und welche Auswirkungen sich daraus für ihr Handeln ergaben. Anhand ausgewählter Stellen aus der Korrespondenz mit Pauline Wiesel werden
Motive und Themen vorgestellt, die auf das zugrundeliegende Selbstverständnis der Autorin geprüft werden. Solche sind das „Freundschafts-Motiv“, das Bild von der Gesellschaft
und die Probleme der „Selbstbehauptung“ in diesem Kontext. Zudem sollen mögliche Parallelen im Erleben der Schreiberinnen berücksichtigt werden. Zum besseren Verständnis wird die
Untersuchung durch einen Bericht über die Wurzeln des modernen Antisemitismus in Deutschland eingeleitet. Gleichzeitig interessiert an dieser Stelle die Beziehung Rahel Varnhagens zu den jüdischen Traditionen und Verhaltensmustern. Neben der Frage wie Rahels
jüdische Herkunft ihr Denken und ihre Einstellungen beeinflußte, soll der literarische Wert des Briefwechsels erörtert werden. Es gilt der Tendenz zu begegnen, die Briefe und Tagebuchaufzeichnungen
Rahel Varnhagens einzig als geschichtlich-biographische Quelle zu
funktionalisieren. Die wesentlichen Ergebnisse der Untersuchung werden abschließend zusammengefaßt und diskutiert.
